It is a way of paying attention, to ourselves and our environment, in the present moment without judgement. It is a way of slowing our thoughts down, accepting and recognising our state of being rather than trying to change it. Mindfulness gives us an increased awareness of our feelings and thoughts, enabling us to choose which way to respond, rather than in an automatic way or in the way we always have.

Mindfulness involves body scan meditation, breathing meditations, noticing every day experiences and carrying out day to day activities in a more mindful way.

How can mindfulness help?

Much research has been done and research indicates that some of the potential benefits include:

  • Improved wellbeing and ability to regulate emotion
  • Improved sense of fulfilment
  • Enhanced concentration
  • Better sleep pattern
  • Improved mood of people who are mildly to moderately depressed.
  • Less chance of relapse in people with addiction issues.

Try this three minute breathing space meditation. You can use this anywhere and anytime you feel stressed or anxious.

Brighter Futures can offer Mindfulness workshops for small groups, based on Mindfulness based Cognitive Therapy and Mindfulness based Stress Reduction. Contact us for forthcoming dates. Alternatively, we can offer this on a one to one basis.
